Estes Park is located at 7,522′ above see level in Northern Colorado. This quaint mountain town serves as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, and one of the highest natural points along the Continental Divide. Here are some pointers on the best times of the year to visit Estes Park.
Summer (June-Sept) in Estes Park means the fair weather makes the over 350-miles of hiking trails in the National Park accessible and all around glorious. Trail Ridge Road is the longest continuous paved highway in the USA. With miles of asphalt above the treeline and along the divide, this is an absolute must do if you are visiting during the short summer season while this road is open. Every shop, restaurant and attraction is open through the summer. Traffic, parking, and sold out rooms are typical of this season, we recommend booking about 2-3 month in advance if you plan on visiting Estes Park during the summer.
Spring/Fall (April-May/Sept-Nov) in Estes Park is a time of transition. During these months the bulk of the tourist traffic is gone, and you’ll find that about 75% of the shops, restaurants, and attractions in town are open. Fall is a particularly good time to visit Estes Park and avoid the crowds on the popular trails. Dressing appropriately for the fast changing weather conditions is crucial to visiting during this time of the year. Spring is infamously cold. Lodging can typically be acquired at a fair price and on a walk-in basis (no reservation required), at least on the weekdays.
Winter (Dec-Mar) is a slower time of year in Estes Park. With no formal ski area, snowshoeing and wildlife viewing are popular activities this time of year. Though it is not typically treacherous to navigate the canyon to come up to Estes, 4×4 is recommended during these months. A good portion of the shops and restaurants will be operating on limited hours, or will closed all together in winter. Plan accordingly. Lodging can easily be found, and at it’s best price. The exception being the major holidays that occur this season. Beautiful sunny days and cold nights best sum up the winter in Estes Park.
We hope we’ve shed some light on the Best Time to visit Estes Park, Colorado. We look forward to your visit!
